EEAE presents a summary report on the dosimetry audits conducted over the last 15 years in radiotherapy centers, as an important and useful tool in ensuring patient dosimetry accuracy and consistency in radiotherapy.

The report aims to:
• present the latest data on radiotherapy centers in the country, both in infrastructure/equipment and in human resources;
• provide key methodology for the dosimetry audits;
• present and assess the results of the dosimetry audits conducted countrywide;
• outline the quality of patient dosimetry as recorded and evaluated at a national level;
• highlight the most important lessons learned, that were arisen from the dosimetry audits;
• demonstrate the contribution and the added value of the dosimetry audits to the improvement of patients’ radiotherapy dosimetry accuracy, and
• disseminate the relevant actions and experience of EEAE to stakeholders.

Accuracy in radiotherapy
In radiotherapy, high doses of ionizing radiation are delivered to the tumor as accurately as possible, considering patient positioning and other geometric uncertainties and keeping the doses at the organs-at-risk (OARs) and health tissues as low as practically achievable. The demand for dosimetric and geometric accuracy becomes more important and apparent for new modalities, such as 3D conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), volumetric arc therapy (VMAT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), adaptive radiotherapy (ART), stereotactic radiation therapy and radiosurgery (SRT and SRS, respectively) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

EEAE has introduced the dosimetry audits in all Greek radiotherapy centers by means of on-site visits since 2001. The primary objective of the dosimetry audits is to assess the dosimetric quality, the planned dose accuracy, the treatment complexity and the treatment deliverability of external photon and electron beams and brachytherapy, as well as to identify failures and discrepancies and to provide solutions and corrections towards the improvement of standards and reliability of the radiotherapy centers.
