The Greek Atomic Energy Commission, the national competent authority for radiation protection and nuclear safety, submitted two years ago to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) a request for an international peer review. The review, known as Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS), will focus on the radiation protection and nuclear safety national regulatory framework and its implementation.

Aiming at the multiple benefits of such a process, like the identification of strengths and weaknesses, the improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness, the sharing of international experience and good practices, a ten-day mission of radiation protection and nuclear experts will be conducted in Greece in May 2012. Upon the completion of the review EEAE will make public the final report.

This initiative is in line with the requirements of the more recent European Directives on nuclear safety and waste management, since both directives include the international review as a tool for ensuring high safety standards.
