Press release - Completion of the 6th cycle of the “Postgraduate Educational Course in Radiation Protection and the Safety of Radiation Sources”

The 6th cycle of the postgraduate educational course in radiation protection and the safety of radiation sources (PGEC) was completed today in Athens.  

The course, lasting 22 weeks, was implemented by the Greek Atomic Energy Commission (EEAE), as IAEA Regional Training Center in Europe and Central Asia, in collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the National Technical University, the University of Ioannina and the NCSR “Demokritos”.  

The closing ceremony was attended by Ms. Ana Raffo-Caiado, IAEA Director of the Division for Europe, Department of Technical Cooperation. Ms. Raffo-Caiado thanked EEAE for being a “centre of excellence that prepares the next generation of the radiation protection leaders in Europe; so far, more than 100 students have completed the PGEC in Greece”. She also expressed the expectation that the students will take a leading role in radiation protection in their countries.

Mr. Christos Housiadas, EEAE Chairman, congratulated the 19 participants for the successful completion of the course, emphasizing that “the contribution of Greece in the implementation of international education and training activities is long-standing and has an important impact for radiation safety in the region”.

During her visit to Athens, Ms. Raffo-Caiado visited some of the laboratories (National Technical University of Athens, NCSR “Demokritos”, ΕΕΑΕ) used for the course participants’ training. Also, she had a meeting with the General Secretary for Research and Technology, Ms. M. Kyprianidou. “Training courses for young professionals, such as PGEC, ensures the competence in the important field of radiation protection, which is our priority; congratulations to EEAE for the successful organization of the course” said Ms. Kyprianidou.
